Les querelles de l’art contemporain sont derrière nous. Il y a quelques années encore, on soupçonnait l’art de ne tenir que par les discours et les théories qui le légitimaient ; on lui reprochait de penser, de trop penser, au nom d’une certaine idée de ses fonctions esthétiques ou édifiantes. Le temps est venu de poser une question plus précise : à quoi pense-t-il ? Et surtout : qu’est-ce qui vient nourrir cette pensée ? Pour le savoir, il faut aller y voir de près, rentrer dans la fabrique de l’art. Quels sont les nouveaux dispositifs, objets et pratiques qui font de l’activité artistique une caisse de résonance et un relais actif des autres domaines du savoir ? Par quelles voies singulières les acteurs de l’art (artistes, commissaires, critiques) s’emparent-ils des idées pour les emporter ailleurs, et en produire de nouvelles ? Ce numéro spécial réunit une quinzaine d’auteurs, critiques, philosophes, historiens de l’art, tous familiers de la création contemporaine. On y examine les avatars du musée et de l’exposition, les pratiques de l’art programmé et de l’art-performance, les rencontres art-science, le traitement artistique des archives, les perspectives du cinéma étendu ou exposé , mais aussi le renouvellement de la critique au contact de nouveaux paradigmes théoriques ( tournant iconique , pensée queer , etc.).
